Charlotte and Heidi’s story

Charlotte contacted me to support her with a very important mission… her powered wheelchair was reaching the end of its life due to significant wear and tear over many years, and she needed my help with creating a robust assessment Occupational Therapy report to justify why her very particular powered wheelchair was so vital to her quality of life and independence.

Charlotte was born with achondroplasia, which is linked to all her ongoing health issues and significant functional daily challenges. She is extremely well adapted and knowledgeable about how to maximise her independence due to living with this lifelong condition.

Due to her very bespoke needs, the chair needed to match the exact set up for her, as well as for her specially commissioned Motability car. She has created her own business as a ceramics and print making artist and graphic designer, and was usually getting out and about regularly to artists exhibitions, attending ceramics classes, and enjoying art research at the university library. She also loves swimming and socialising with friends.

I listened very carefully to her needs and worked with the company who supplied her current chair (Baldertech UK – Balder Electric Wheelchairs). I collaborated with their very knowledgeable and experienced technician to ensure that the spec and quote were going to match Charlotte’s exact requirements.

Charlotte’s bespoke wheelchair needs included:

  • Tilt in space movement allows for backward and forward movement which can relieve pressure
  • Fully adjustable seat, back, footrests and leg rests for comfort and support
  • Custom made/ adjust the joystick controls to accommodate Charlotte’s short limb needs
  • Head/ neck roll support designed for Charlotte’s neck
  • Air/ lumbar support to support and relieve back pain
  • Memory foam backrest for pressure relief and comfort
  • A Joystick that can swing away allowing Charlotte to work from the powered wheelchair went out e.g. at her ceramics class or other places of work
  • Customized footplates which lower down to enable stepping up into the chair safely and independently, adjusted for very short lower limbs
  • Adjustable seating – Charlotte reported that her NHS prescribed high pressure relieving Roho seat cushion was known to work well and fitted well in this chair
  • The Balder was reported to adjust down to the lowest seat height on the market- this was one of the most essential features to enable Charlotte to get in and out of the chair safely and independently (tilt was +/- 15 degrees)
  • Forward tilt function – to enable a very low independent seat transfer , for the same reasons as above
  • Lateral support pads which could swing away to accommodate work positions as may be needed for carrying out her artwork
  • Safety: A vehicle lock down system which MUST work with the Motability car; this chair was checked to work very precisely with Charlotte’s bespoke highly specialized custom-built Motability car
  • Custom seat belt – with the extra wide and short seat depth needed
  • Custom cup holder – for an essential cuppa when working!

Charlotte’s testimonial:

“Heidi’s thorough and professionally prepared report was instrumental in securing the remaining £20,000 required to fund my new specialist Balder F380 powerchair.
Throughout the process, Heidi demonstrated exceptional kindness, care, and conscientiousness. Her report was comprehensive, detailed, and of an outstanding standard. I submitted it to five different charitable trusts, and each application was successful. I have no doubt that the quality of Heidi’s report played a significant role in achieving this exceptional outcome.

I would recommend Heidi without hesitation to anyone requiring a thorough, professional, and compassionate assessment.”
